Why we REALLY go through so many diapers

I've heard stories about kids that pull their diapers off. For some reason, they love the surprise they give their parents after a nap when the parent comes in to find them completely naked.

I don't have THAT problem.

I have THIS problem.

Brooklyn doesn't care about taking off her own diaper. But she is infatuated with changing Lydia's diaper-- without my help, and sometimes, without my knowledge.

I had just changed Lydia's diaper and gotten her dressed for the day. I left her on the floor while I went to make myself decent. When I came back, Lydia was undressed, and un-diapered. Brooklyn was summoning all the muscle power she had to try to lift Lydia so she could put a clean diaper under her.

--"What are you doing Brooklyn? I just changed Lydia."

--"She STINKY!"

Of course.

Super GREEN, Not-even-a-little-black, Thumb

Remember this?

It was more of a fun project than anything else. And did I mention that it only cost $11 to build the whole garden box, buy the soil, and plant the seeds/plants? Someone at Home Depot offered us $200 off our purchase if we signed up for their credit card. Since we only have one card account open between the two of us, we decided it wouldn't be a bad idea.

We spent $211.

Anyways, I wasn't too sure anything would grow. I haven't had much luck in the past keeping anything alive but my husband and children. Still, we gave it a shot.

The results:

Not bad eh? We've had corn, peas, green beans, carrots, zucchini, squash, strawberries, and we even have a pepper on now! I don't know how we made things grow, but we did it! (note: it may have helped that I did not touch a plant or seed during the planting process)

Hey, I bet YOU can't grow a zucchini that looks like this:

Do you think I could auction it off on ebay?

Contest: Who Loves Me the Most?

I'm now announcing a contest: Who Loves Me the Most?
The idea behind the competition is really very simple. Whoever can get me on What Not to Wear or another makeover show wins. And then I'll think you're pretty much the best person ever.
Ready... go!

Poop Art

Yes, I am serious.

Poop Art.

If only that was a typo...

I heard Brooklyn wake up from her nap today, but since it is the exception rather than the rule that she wakes up happy and plays by herself in her room, I gladly obliged and didn't bother her. About thirty minutes later I heard her say, "Mama! Peepee in potty!" I told her to run to the bathroom (we're working on potty training), but on our way there I noticed that her hands were really dirty. At first I thought it was just marker, but on closer visual inspection saw that it looked like dirt. On closer smell inspection I realized that it was poop. Eww.

After a thorough hand scrubbing, I changed her diaper, where I saw that the fingerpainting was all over her legs and belly. Let's hope that the streaks on her face were from absentminded face scratches.

I counted to ten before I went to check out her room. Luckily, for her sake, the damage was minimal. We'll chalk today up as just one more day that I was actually grateful to be renting rather than living in my own house. I'll take poop-free carpet in my dream house, thank you very much.

Don't even think about asking for pictures. This was one "picture perfect moment" that I will gladly forget.

P.S. Grandma, we don't need any more cute sundresses. They give WAY too much diaper access.

Thank Goodness for Big Sisters

I know I've already posted about how much of a helper Brooklyn is, but I couldn't resist putting up more pictures of her being a big sister. Sometimes I feel like I spend more of my day guarding Lydia FROM Brooklyn than anything else, but I know she means well, and is only trying to take care of/keep her little sister quiet. Needless to say, I quickly learned what Lydia's "Save me from Brooklyn!" cry sounds like.

If Brooklyn continues on this "mommy training," soon I shouldn't have to do anything. She's basically got everything down. Here are a few of the things Brooklyn has about mastered:
-feeding Lydia anything that resembles a bottle, (ie. contact solution bottle)
-giving Lydia toys and playing with her
-forcing and holding in a pacifier despite rejection
-reading books and singing songs to Lydia
-washing Lydia's face and any exposed body part with wipes
-cutting Lydia's fingernails
-changing diapers

All in all, it's really a lot of fun to watch Brooklyn with Lydia. She obviously loves her a lot because Lydia is one of the very few people that Brooklyn will share her special blanket with. The blue-ish blanket below? That's Brooklyn's.

This is a video of Brooklyn singing "I Am A Child of God" to Lydia to try to get her to stop crying. Who knew it could be sung to ANY tune?

Reality Hits

So as I was saying, our warmup for reality went relatively well. However, I underestimated the similarities between running to Basha's for 20 minutes and spending a whole day out.

Because we live so far from a big city, if you go "into town," you can plan on making it a day-long event. No worries, I'm a planner, and very organized. I knew our day out would go off without a hitch. I knew where we would be, and how long everything would take.

Right...

I had an appointment at 10 am, but even after having issues at the gas station, I saw that I would still have a 10 minute buffer to get there on time. (Like I said, totally prepared. You never know what could go wrong on a 1 hour 45 minute drive. I also realized I needed this 10 extra minutes to do Brooklyn's hair. It hadn't been brushed since the day before) By the way, this day required me getting everyone up REALLY early, and having them dressed and fed (Go me!). Thirty minutes down the road Brooklyn coughs and spits up a little bit. Weird, but ok. I find a place to pull off the road and wipe her face (spitting up= 1 wipe). We're all good, that only took 1 minute and 30 seconds. I start off again and two minutes later, I watch helplessly in the rearview mirror as Brooklyn unloads what looks like three adult's breakfast into her lap (puke= half of the remaining wipes). Yum... My first experience cleaning up this much puke without Tim. It's lucky I wasn't pregnant this time.

10+ minute buffer:gone
Clothing for Brooklyn:gone
Car:stinky
Me: frazzled and stinky

So with a naked toddler and no time to spare, I decided I either had to hit the appointment with her looking like an orphan, or stop somewhere to pick up at least a shirt. Her shorts were salvageable, and as long as nobody stood too close and could smell them, or inspect them, they just looked a little dirty. My only option on the way was Goodwill. Not a bad place to grab an emergency shirt. Unfortunately at this point, both kids were asleep, and I was late. I screeched to a stop at the curb, ran inside and picked up the closest children's shirt and paid for it-- all done in 1 minute and 27 seconds. Irresponsible of me? Yes. But what would you have done?

We made it to the appointment, stinky, and with Brooklyn's crazy hair, but present. AND fully clothed! SUCCESS

After this fiasco and a WAY too long appointment, we went to Jen's house so she could re-highlight my hair. She also let me wash the carseat and clothes there... lifesaver! Her daughter and both of mine cried pretty much the whole time. It wasn't what I would call a "relaxing salon appointment for mom". Whatev. I don't know why I was expecting anything at that point.

With fabulous hair (meaning the highlights, not the wet mess/rats nest on my head), all we had left to do on our adventure was go grocery shopping to load up. We narrowed the list of stores to one, I couldn't handle anymore...

Shopping was fairly uneventful. Fairly. Soon after arriving I started to smell something horrendous. It didn't take long to realize that smell was following us... and that it was Brooklyn. Yay... I hadn't brought diapers in, and didn't want to trek back outside to get one because we were in the middle of shopping, so I decided it could wait until we were done. I mathematically calculated the number of wipes remaining and what would be needed, and decided we could just barely slide by.

I got to the register and while the cashier was ringing everything up I got my first glance of Brooklyn's backside. I don't just mean her bum, I mean the WHOLE backside of her body. Poop Poop EVERYWHERE. How she managed to get it from her bum up to her shoulder blades-- well, I'll never know.

At that point, I realized we needed to get out of the store pronto, before CPS was called. After the day I had just had, someone might actually be dialing their number.

We rushed out to the car, avoiding all conversation and eye contact and I started stripping Brooklyn down. Rest of the wipes: gone. How I managed to clean it up with what we had left? Well, let's call it a miracle. Tender mercy.

The day had come full circle, I was once again driving with my naked toddler and baby. As we started down the road I started to laugh. It's a good thing I had only gotten 5 hours of sleep the night before, or I'm sure I would have been sane enough to cry. It was nearly dinnertime, I wasn't close to home, and the day had been disastrous, though productive. Just then Lydia woke up and began to cry. I realized I had completely forgotten about feeding her, and there was no way she could last two more hours. I decided we were going to stop at wendy's to get a frosty, and maybe dinner so I could feed Lydia.

I turned to the backseat to get Brooklyn excited about getting some icecream when I saw/remembered that she was naked. *sigh... How many restaurants like naked people showing up for dinner?

I just kept driving. I pushed it as far as I could before I had to stop to feed Lydia on the side of the road. Luckily Brooklyn was asleep, so it was a good break for me too. It gave me some time to think.

I thought about the whole day and how awful it had been. I thought how much easier things would be without kids. I remembered what it was like to pick up and go somewhere on a whim without a diaper bag. I thought about all of the tears I had wiped, and the noses and bums too.

Then I thought about how I wouldn't give the stinky diapers, sleepless nights, and vomit for anything. I don't get paid salary or even hourly, but my benefits are unbeatable. In exchange for the stinky diapers I get wonderfully slobbery kisses and hugs. In exchange for sleepless nights, I get to hold and cuddle my babies. And there's nothing quite like hearing "I love you" from a two year old.

My girls are the best thing to happen to me since Tim came along. I have my moments, and certainly my days, when I wonder what we were thinking, but at the end of the day, I am so blessed and lucky to have such a wonderful husband and two beautiful girls.

Thank goodness for those moments when we get to stop and think.

Warmup for Reality

So about two weeks ago I woke up feeling bold and courageous... I decided to go to the grocery store with both girls, and without Tim. Since we only needed bread, milk, and eggs, and Basha's is only 4 minutes away, I figured this grocery run was a good warmup for reality.

I loaded both girls into the truck because their carseats/bases were already in there, all the while convincing myself that "I COULD DO THIS." Minor setback when I stalled because I forgot I was driving a manual, but we were off! About 5 seconds down the road I realized I couldn't see out the back window. Then I realized I was pulling our 14 foot long enclosed trailer. Apparently we didn't unhitch it the night before...

I've never pulled a trailer before-- need I say more? I was terrified. I kept praying that the back door was locked, and that the safety chains and hitch were really still hooked up. But frankly, if that trailer had popped off, I might have just kept on driving. Chances are, I could have quickly ditched the trailer without anyone seeing that I was the idiot pulling it behind me to the grocery store...

Anyways, we made it to the store, and despite having to park pretty far away because I was nearly as long as a semi, I didn't crash, ditch the trailer, or run over an innocent pedestrian. SUCCESS.

The point of the quick grocery run was to see if I could sanely manage both girls while running necessary errands. I just chanced into the greater victory of learning to pull a trailer. Oh well. A few dollars later, with no tears shed and no public disciplining required, we had enough basics to atleast make dinner. I knew I was ready for the open road and a "real" day of shopping with the girls.

Wanna hear about our first full day out? Trust me, you do... to be continued...

I've Lost My Mind

How many times have you talked to another mother and found that she too, feels like she has lost her mind?

"What happened to my great memory? What happened to my sane thoughts? What happened to my perfectly un-slurred speech? Where did my clear mind go?"

I had a stroke of brilliance the other day, one of the few clear thoughts I've had for a while... I know why we feel like we're losing our minds! It isn't just a pregnancy thing, it's definitely a mothering thing (No children yet? You're still mothering your husband, so if "losing your mind" fits you, continue reading).

There are several things involved in mothering that contribute to this loss of mental capacity:
  • Planning meals that include something resembling a healthy food that your children/husband will even try
  • Getting everyone to another location together, on time, and without leaving anyone
  • Keeping the peace
  • Managing a household budget
  • Playing hide-and-seek, tag, coloring, and singing the ABC's for hours on end
  • Dora, Barney, Sesame Street, etc.
  • Nasty diapers (the gases released are clearly potent enough to kill brain cells)
  • Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping... over and over again
  • Laundry-- because it never ends... "didn't I just wash this shirt yesterday?..."
The list could continue, but rather than bore you, I will cut to the chase and reveal the main reason you feel like/you are losing your mind.

YOU DO NOT SLEEP

..see what I mean? I'm not sure this post even made sense!
